Iceland is a volcanically and geologically active island in the North Atlantic Ocean, just outside the Arctic Circle. It is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The island's interior, the Highlands of Iceland, is a cold and uninhabitable combination of sand, mountains, glaciers and lava fields.

Landmannalaugar, in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland, is situated at the edge of Laugahraun lava field, which was formed in an eruption in around 1477. It is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and surrounding landscape. The colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar are absolutely fascinating. Landmannalaugar is famous for its hiking trails. This panoramic photograph was taken during the hike up Mt. Bláhnjúkur ("Blue Peak").
