Description
Fakarava lagoon from the Pearl Havaiki. Since 2016, Fakarava has been classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, recognized worldwide for scuba diving, which is the main economic resource of the island. Fakarava atoll is 60 km long and 21 km wide. Its lagoon is the second largest in all of French Polynesia (after Rangiroa) and covers 1,121 square km. It is accessible by two passes: Garuae (north), the largest pass in French Polynesia, and Tetamanu (South). The atoll is the coral outgrowth (150 meters) from the top of a volcanic submarine mountain which measures 1170 meters from the ocean floor.
