Description
France - Roselend chapel in front of Roselend lake in Savoie.
Roselend chapel is a religious building, dedicated to Saint Madeleine, located on the foothills of the Roselend dam. Originally, there was a Romanesque chapel in the hamlet of Roselend. This one was dedicated to the Saint Marie-Madeleine. A document from the 13th century speaks of a chapel that could be this one. More precise sources indicate that the bell was cast in 1608 or that donations were made in 1710, 1757 and 1760. In 1794, it welcomed, for their first mass on their return from exile, four emigrant priests from the valley, including the future archbishop of Chambéry Antoine Martinet. Engulfed when the dam was filled with water on May 6, 1960, a chapel was rebuilt two years later near the road that overlooks the lake, in a more modern style, as seen in this picture.
The Roselend dam is the 4th highest dam in France. Built in the 50's and 60's, it created a 320 hectare water reservoir that is particularly appreciated by fishermen and hikers. Nestled among the alpine pastures, this lake composes with the surrounding mountains a magnificent landscape and offers beautiful panoramas on the Alps and in particular on the Mont-Blanc.
Built at an altitude of nearly 1600 m, the Roselend dam impresses by its size and by the vast blue expanse of its reservoir, overlooked by massifs of more than 2400 m of altitude. Family trails allow you to walk along the shoreline. A 4-hour hike is enough to go around the lake and stay on its shores. There are many other hiking trails in the mountains around the lake, which offer breathtaking views of the dam and the turquoise waters bordered by green mountains. Most of the outdoor activities are practiced around the lake: climbing, via ferrata, walking and mountain biking, paragliding, or horseback riding. You can practice fishing from the shore. The lake is classified in 1st category. Its cold and deep waters are favourable to the presence of salmonids. To enjoy a panoramic view of the lake and a pleasant moment of relaxation, make a stop at the Chalet de Roselend: on the terrace facing the landscape or in the warm mountain decor of the room, you can taste local specialties or simply refresh yourself with a drink.
