Description
Iceland : Fagrifoss waterfall near the Lakagígar region.
Iceland is a volcanically and geologically active island in the North Atlantic Ocean, just outside the Arctic Circle. It is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The island's interior, the Highlands of Iceland, is a cold and uninhabitable combination of sand, mountains, glaciers and lava fields.
Laki, or Lakagígar (the Craters of Laki) is a volcanic fissure in the western part of Vatnajökull National Park, not far from the volcanic fissure of Eldgjá and the small village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The fissure is properly referred to as Lakagígar, while Laki is a mountain that the fissure bisects. Lakagígar is part of a volcanic system centered on the volcano Grímsvötn and including the volcano Thordarhyrna. It lies between the glaciers of Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull, in an area of fissures that run in a southwest to northeast direction.
Fagrifoss is waterfall situated near the Lakagígar region. It is located along the 4x4 road F206 approximately 24 km (15 mi) from Kirkjubæjarklaustur and 40 km (25 mi) from Laki. Access to the waterfall requires the crossing of a river ford, for which a 4x4 vehicle is needed. Fagrifoss means “Beautiful Falls” in Icelandic. Adding to its scenic allure is how it contrasts with the rugged and desolate scenery the falls is nestled in.

looks just like Iceland the land of waterfalls, fantastic Olivier
Olivier Parent replied:
Thanks a lot Dennis! And yes, for waterfalls lovers, Iceland is definitely the place to see ;). Fagrifoss gets much less attention than Godafoss, Gullfoss, Skogafoss or Seljalandsfoss for example because it is far from the main road and much less accessible but the waterfall itself and its surroundings are beautiful.

Wonderful scenery!
Olivier Parent replied:
Thank you Alexios! As far as I remember, Fagrifoss means something like "pretty falls" in Icelandic. As many other locations on this beautiful island, you can only get access to it with a 4WD. I have been lucky enough to get just a little bit of sunlight illuminating the waterfall on that very cloudy afternoon.
