Reunion island : view over Grand Bassin from Bois Court. Réunion (previously known as Île Bourbon) is an overseas department and region of the French Republic. The official language is French. In addition, the majority of the region's population speaks Réunion Creole. Reunion island is 63 km (39 mi) long; 45 km (28 mi) wide. It is above a hotspot in the Earth's crust. The Piton de la Fournaise, a shield volcano on the eastern end of Réunion Island, has erupted more than 100 times since 1640, and is under constant monitoring. The hotspot that fuels Piton de la Fournaise also created the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues. The Piton des Neiges volcano, the highest point on the island at 3,070 m (10,070 ft) above sea level, is northwest of the Piton de la Fournaise. While the Piton de la Fournaise is one of Earth's most active volcanoes, the Piton des Neiges is dormant. The slopes of both volcanoes are heavily forested. I studied art history and visual arts since the early 90's, then specialized in graphic design, visual communication and photography. Since 1999, I have been working as a photographer and graphic designer for clients from both the public and private sectors. Thanks a lot Mike! Reunion island has a lot of spectacular landscapes with lush vegetation covering steep volcanic cliffs, small villages nested in deep valleys, black sand beaches, beautiful waterfalls, craters and lava fields… If you look close enough, you'll see there is a waterfall in the bottom left corner of this image, near the intersection of the two rivers.
