Montrond, in Maurienne (Savoie, France) : Saint Nicolas church in front of the Aiguilles d’Arves mountain. The Aiguilles d’Arves (3,514 metres - 11,529 ft) is a mountain in the Arves massif in the French Alps. The mountain, comprising three separate peaks (in French Aiguille), is the highest point of the massif, and is located in the department of Savoie. The Southern Needle (Aiguille Meridionale) is 3,514 metres (11,529 ft) high. The Central Needle (Auguille Centrale) is 3,513 metres (11,526 ft) high. The Northern Needle, on the left of this photograph, also named the Cat Head (Aiguille Septentrionale - Tête de Chat) is 3,364 metres (11,037 ft) high. The church of Saint-Nicolas dates from 1674 (replacing that of 1184). It is listed on the "Chemins du Baroque" route.

Olivier, Were there's any cool artifacts of St Nicholas visits inside this village church? Do you know, is there a particular cross or shield for St Nicholas? GJ
Olivier Parent replied:
The church of Saint-Nicolas is a simple mountain church. The current church dates from 1674 (replacing that of 1184). It is listed on the "Chemins du Baroque" route. The altar (1688) is from Claude Borrelin and Jean Symond (who also carved in 1693 the great crucifix). The large painting in the center of the altarpiece is the work of Gabriel Dufour, painter to his Royal Highness Victor-Amédée II. The pulpit and the communion table are also from the 17th century, as well as a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Bernard de Menthon, a Madonna and Child (gilded wood), and several paintings including a Madonna and Child by Jean-Baptiste Jomard (1689). This is all I can say that is significant about this church apart from its exceptional location with the majestic Aiguilles d'Arves as a backdrop. In the 17th century, most of the villages of Tarentaise and Maurienne (Savoie - France) rebuilt their churches, such as this one, previous constructions not having withstood the harsh winters or the many wars that ravaged these valleys.
