Description
Tikehau Pearl Beach resort in the Tuamotu (French Polynesia). Tikehau is a coral atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia which economy is based mainly on tourism, developed around the “Tikehau Pearl Beach” complex showed in this photograph. The atoll is the coral outgrowth from the summit of a volcanic submarine mount which measures 1,750 meters from the ocean floor. Tikehau has the particularity of being an elevated atoll (the highest point is 10 meters above sea level). The atoll's lagoon is 17 miles long and 12 miles wide, surrounded by an almost continuous coral reef with only one pass deep and wide enough for navigation (Tuheiava Pass). In 1987, Jacques-Yves Cousteau defined the sea which surrounds Tikehau as one of the most fish-rich in the world.
